Our largest resident by far is Lloyd. He came to see the Equine Dentist last
October because he had a weight problem and was such a gentleman that, when
the opportunity to offer him a permanent home came along, we took it. He is
now being nursed back to full fitness, ready for a more full and active life.
Lloyd is an Irish Draft type horse and stands at around 17.3hh. His recent
history was with a local hunt and, because of his gentle nature, he was generally
used for shows and parades. The tough terrain of this hunt country was not
particularly suitable for this type of horse so he was not often seen out on the
hunting field, but his kindly nature was apparent to all who knew him.
Concerns were raised for his wellbeing when he failed to gain any condition
over the summer months even though he was turned out with company in large
fields. Despite being wormed and fed extra, he still failed to gain any weight.
His confidence started to suffer and, as he became physically weak, the other
horses started to bully him.
It was only when he was observed to be
taking an extraordinary length of time to
eat a slice of haylage that his teeth were
suspected of contributing to his problems.
Closer investigation by the Equine Dentist
revealed that, although his teeth had been
rasped, the rear molars had developed
excessively sharp edges and were
preventing any of the other molars from
contact. In effect, he was unable to chew
his food.
Within 24 hours of having his teeth done
Lloyd was a totally different horse. He
relaxed overnight and hasn’t stopped
gaining weight since! He will continue to
build up his fitness over the summer
months playing with his newfound friends
and with gentle exercise. We are
enjoying working with him and watch his
confidence grow on a daily basis. You
can follow his progress on our blog.
